It is July 30th...only one day left until August is here...and I feel like I haven't been able to prepare anything! I keep thinking about how my classroom will turn out and how much different having my own room will feel from student teaching.

I have two questions today and would LOVE some advice!
1) How much different was your first year teaching from student teaching? 2) What is one thing you wish you would have done your first year that you didn't do?

My last placement as a student I had 5 year olds, my first class as a real teacher I had 7th graders... There was NOTHING similar about them and it took me the whole year just to get my head around everything.

I wish I had started and kept up resource folders for each subject/topic/whatever etc. Everything I own is all mixed up and it's so overwhelming to even try sorting it out that I haven't...

Learning to be awesome
I actually didn't have a traditional student teaching experience. We had several field experience courses, and then the option to do student teaching or an internship (if we could get hired) - luckily I was hired! I will say that one thing I wish that I would have done during my first year was involve parents more - it was hard enough for me to keep my head above water just teaching content - and I also wish that I would have planned things further in advance. I ended up with some great ideas, but many didn't come to light due to time constraints. I'm hoping that now that I know my grade level better I will be able to plan things further in advance.

Student teaching was very different for me than my first year in that there was no one I could "fall back" on - hopefully your school will assign you a mentor. I think the thing I wish I had done my first year was build more community at the very start. Hope this helps and thanks for the shout-out! :)

My first year was WAY different than student teaching, and was actually WAY different than my second year teaching too! As long as you go in with high expectations, flexibility, and a love for students you'll do great!! I am your newest TPT store follower too!!
